Urologist Dr. Brent Williams is presenting the JRMC U: Kick Out Kidney Stones on Wednesday, July 12 at Two Rivers Activity Center.

Kidney stones are hard, rock-like material that vary in size and shape. Some are as small as a pea, while others grow as large as a golf ball. High-sodium foods, paired with dehydration, can lead to their formation.

As a stone moves into the urinary system, a person might experience severe pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and blood in the urine.

Medical providers recommend drinking water and remaining hydrated to care for the kidneys. A diet low in oxalate can also help. Oxalate is found in foods like nuts and nut products, legumes, rhubarb, spinach and wheat bran.

Kidney stones can impact anyone, though men and people with a family history are most likely to experience them. They most often impact individuals aged 30 to 60.

In addition to kidney stones, Dr. Williams said he is happy to take questions on urology care in general.

Common urological concerns are: “What’s normal?” and “When do I see a doctor?” Individuals can ask questions privately and in advance at info@jrmcnd.com.

The event is free of charge and includes a light lunch.
