Gackle students paid it forward Friday, Jan. 3, with a gift to children in need.
Fifteen students from the Higher Power Youth League at Gackle’s Emanuel Lutheran Church donated tie blankets as well as a $250 gift card to the Kala’s Korner program at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.
The students collected the money as part of their focus on outreach and service projects.
Kala’s Korner offers personal hygiene items like toothbrushes and shampoo, as well as toys or activity books for young patients and visitors. The items of comfort reduce anxiety for any child – whether that child is a patient or, if that child is the relative of a patient.
“Kala’s Korner supports little ones who are here as patients. It also supports children who are here while their parent or sibling receive care,” said JRMC Foundation Director Lisa Jackson. “When someone is sick, you rush to the hospital without thinking.”
“It’s important to get the youth out and giving back where they can,” said Beth Reiser, Higher Power Youth League leader. “It’s great that the blankets and supplies are going to Kala’s Korner. We are quite fond of the Schroeder family in Gackle, N.D.”
Named after the late Kala Bercier, JRMC established Kala’s Korner in 2013 thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. Kala (Schroeder) Bercier grew up on her parents’ dairy farm in rural Gackle. She graduated from Gackle-Streeter High School and Jamestown College (now the University of Jamestown). Each year, Kala’s Korner supports about 200 children.
To support Kala’s Korner, the JRMC Foundation seeks assistance collecting:
- hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel-sized toiletries
- foot slippers
- blankets or material to make blankets
- play dough
- busy books, coloring books, chapter books and children’s books
- scrunchies and hair ties
- crayons, colored pencils
