On any given day at Jamestown High School, you’ll find more than coaches and students preparing for the next game — you’ll find a steady, reassuring presence in the athletic training room.
At JRMC we understand the importance of supporting the health and wellbeing of local students — which is why, through our partnership, we choose to fully fund the athletic training program including the staffing of JRMC Athletic Trainers Mason Ankenbauer and Shawnee Hansen, allowing them to work directly within Jamestown High School’s daily athletic life.
That consistency builds something deeper than treatment, it builds trust.
“The students come to us with injuries, but also with questions, concerns and sometimes just to talk. That connection really matters,” says athletic trainer Shawnee Hansen.

Over the past school year, JRMC Athletic Trainers supported 406 Jamestown Public School student athletes across multiple seasons, providing dedicated, no-cost coverage exclusively for the district’s 24 varsity athletic teams.
From injury prevention and rehabilitation to sideline support at every game, our JRMC team plays a vital role in student success — both on and off the field or court. The most common injuries they treat include sprains, strains, fractures, concussions, overuse injuries and joint injuries, all supported by on-site assessment and referrals when needed.
“Our goal is to keep kids healthy and competing, but also to help them understand their bodies,” Mason Ankenbauer says. “Prevention is just as important as recovery, and we get to work on both every single day.”
Prevention is woven into everything they do. Athletic Trainers provide education on injury prevention, guide stretching and strengthening routines, and support athletes through taping, bracing, hydration monitoring, WAY testing and concussion protocols — helping reduce risk before injuries happen.
“By being present, you get to know the students as people, not just athletes,” says Shawnee Hansen.
On a typical game day, their work begins well before game time. Our JRMC trainers arrive early to prepare the athletic training area, assess athletes, tape or brace as needed and ensure emergency and hydration supplies are ready. During competition, they provide immediate injury evaluation and care, coordinate emergency response if necessary and help guide safe return-to-play decisions.

More than the game
Beyond the sidelines, their impact continues. JRMC Athletic Trainers provide water, ice and taping supplies, conduct equipment checks and follow up with athletes after events. They maintain ongoing communication with coaches, parents and medical providers, and collaborate closely with JRMC Orthopedics, Podiatry and Therapy teams to support rehabilitation and recovery. They also invest in the future of healthcare by helping train student managers and aspiring athletic trainers, equipping them with the skills to safely support teams throughout the season.
At JRMC we’re committed to this partnership, and that commitment continues to grow. This summer, JRMC will add a third athletic trainer, further strengthening support for Jamestown’s student athletes.
