Sometimes, geography is the biggest barrier to care.

One way to reduce that barrier is to offer specialized care, close to home. Gynecologist Dr. Gregg McAdoo joined Jamestown Regional Medical Center in 2021. His expertise allows access to specialized care otherwise not available without a 100-mile drive.

Another way to reduce barriers is to offer flexible scheduling, transportation and financial support. That’s why R.M. Stoudt’s Running of the Pink event funds the No Excuses program. In the 14 years of ROP, R.M. Stoudt has raised more than $163,000 for women’s care in this community.

Central Valley Health District and Jamestown Regional Medical Center formed No Excuses in 2015. Since then, more than 100 women have received 3D mammograms, cervical screenings and other services they otherwise wouldn’t have due to time, finances, transportation or lack of insurance coverage.

“Running of the Pink is important because local cancer care is near and dear to our hearts,” said Tara Kapp, BDC & internet manager for R.M. Stoudt. “Some women need help affording both the cancer screenings as well as the care after – women we know from work, school or church. The funds we raise at ROP help eliminate that barrier for our friends and neighbors.”

WHO SHOULD HAVE A CERVICAL SCREENING OR PAP TEST?

No Excuses offers cervical screenings and 3D mammograms, which are unique to some communities. The 3D image gives a clearer and more accurate picture of the breast – meaning doctors can detect cancer faster. Cervical screenings, also called pap smears, check the health of a woman’s cervix to prevent cancer. Most women ages 40 and older should have a mammogram each year. Women ages 21 and older should have a cervical screening every three to five years, depending on their age and the recommendation of their provider.

“Specialized care and the newest of technology means we can increase the number of women who routinely screen,” said Trisha Jungels, JRMC Chief Nursing Officer. “These screenings save lives. Women deserve the best.”

CANCER IN THE COUNTY

At any given time, more than 1,300 Stutsman County women are not up to date on their mammograms of pap tests. Cancer is the leading cause of death for 45-84 year-olds in our region. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

No Excuses isn’t just for women who can’t afford it. Busy moms, grandmothers and professionals are also worthy candidates. That’s why No Excuses can accept patients into the evening.

“We know it’s hard for some women to make time for themselves during the work day. We also know transportation can be a barrier. If you’ve never had a mammogram or cervical screening, or it’s been a long time, you are definitely the woman we are looking for,” said Robin Iszler, registered nurse and unit administrator at Central Valley Health.
