Relief from pain was a long journey for Devils Lake resident Les Woitte. However, after years of tests, questions and procedures, Les is now pain-free — fishing, hunting and living his life again — thanks to the compassionate care of Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC).

In 2022, Les, a technician at Ironhide Equipment in Devils Lake, began experiencing significant pain in his ankle and knee. As the pain increased, it began affecting nearly every part of his life.

“I tolerate pain pretty well, but this wore me down,” said Les. “It felt like I couldn’t do anything anymore: work, hobbies, sleep. I would get off work and be exhausted from dealing with the pain. That’s when I knew it was time to get help.”

The process of identifying the source of Les’ pain was not easy. He was referred to several clinics and doctors, tests and scans, even visiting oncology in Fargo. After a series of tests and scans, the Fargo oncology team identified the issue: a stress fracture in his fibula that he had unknowingly walked on for months. By then, his knee and ankle were also severely damaged.

“I had been walking on it for five or six months before it was caught,” said Les. “By that point, the knee and ankle were also completely worn out.”

Angela Dugan, PA-C — Les’ provider at CHI in Devils Lake — referred him to JRMC Orthopedics, where he met orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael T. Dean and physician assistant Pat Walter. Dr. Dean repaired the fibula first, followed by a total knee replacement. But the lingering ankle pain meant Les’ journey wasn’t over.

“After those two surgeries with Dr. Dean, there was still pain in my ankle from walking on an injured leg,” Les said. “The team recommended JRMC foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Renschler.”

Together, Les and Dr. Rachael Renschler considered several options, from cortisone shots to ankle fusion. Ultimately, they decided on a total ankle replacement — a procedure that would preserve his mobility and allow him to maintain an active lifestyle.

“Leading up to the surgery, I was excited,” Les said. “Dr. Renschler explained everything clearly — the parts they would be using, steps of the procedure and what to expect. The whole team made me feel comfortable and safe, like I was in great hands.”

In October 2024, Les underwent total ankle replacement surgery at JRMC. The results were clear.

“After the replacement, the pain was gone,” he said. “I only needed Tylenol after surgery, and just for the first while. That’s when I knew I had made the right choice.”

Following surgery, Les completed physical therapy and recovery with JRMC. Just months later, he was back to living life without limitations.

“The most rewarding part of this whole procedure has been regaining my mobility. Every morning, I wake up with no pain and feel thankful,” said Les. “Last year, I had to cancel hunting and fishing trips because I couldn’t get around. This year, I’m back out walking ravines and hunting again. That means a lot to me.”

Les traveled more than from Devils Lake to Jamestown for his care — a decision he says changed his life.

“I absolutely recommend JRMC. I feel like I have my life back, and that wouldn’t have been possible without this surgery,” he said. “If you have knee, hip or ankle problems, don’t wait. Dr. Dean, Pat Walter and Dr. Renschler — the whole team did a great job for me.”
