Q&A with Holli

Who is at the highest risk for non-healing wounds?

Those at the highest risk include individuals with diabetes, arterial disease or venous insufficiency. People who are immobile, elderly or have poor nutrition are more susceptible to non-healing wounds. If you fall into any of these categories, it’s crucial to seek professional care. The team at JRMC is ready to help you manage your wound and prevent complications. Make an appointment here.

Why do you think people delay seeking professional wound care?

Many people believe that their wound will heal on its own, which can lead to dangerous delays in getting the care they need.

What dietary recommendations would you give to patients with chronic wounds?

Protein is essential for wound healing. For diabetic patients, controlling blood sugar levels is equally important in promoting faster healing.

When is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) recommended for wound healing?

HBOT is typically recommended based on the wound’s diagnosis. It’s particularly beneficial for patients with bone infections or those suffering from poor blood flow.

What do people do to pass the time while in the oxygen chamber?

Most patients either rest or watch TV to pass the time during their therapy sessions.

How does diabetes cause wounds?

Diabetes can lead to foot wounds primarily due to neuropathy, a condition where high blood sugar over time damage the nerves. When the nerves in the feet are affected, injuries can go unnoticed, leading to wounds that are challenging to heal because of consistently elevated blood sugar levels. If you are diabetic and concerned about wound care, JRMC offers specialized services to help manage and treat these conditions effectively.

What is a wound vac?

A wound vac is a specialized dressing with suction attached to it. It helps draw out drainage and promotes new tissue growth aiding in the healing process.

If you could create a new wound care product, what would it be and what would it do?

I’d love to develop a 3D graft designed for deep wounds. It would be an innovative solution to enhance healing in challenging cases.

What are the signs and symptoms of a wound infection?

Signs of infection include increased drainage, a noticeable odor, redness and swelling around the wound. If the wound isn’t healing these symptoms should not be ignored.

Is there any evidence that wound healing is better at JRMC?

Yes! JRMC has earned the Healogics Clinical Excellence Award and the Center of Distinction Award. These honors recognize our exceptional patient satisfaction, superior clinical outcomes and high wound healing rates, underscoring the quality of care we provide. Trust your wound care to JRMC and experience the difference our award-winning team can make.

How are venous leg ulcers best managed?

Managing venous leg ulcers involves using proper dressings to control drainage, applying compression and keeping the skin moisturized to aid in the healing process.
