Over 6,000 total joints.

Dr. Dean grew up in Michigan and fell in love with the Jamestown “suburbs” by way of a duck hunt. Being outdoors, fishing, driving red tractors and playing with his four dogs recharge all his batteries.

Most North Dakotans are stoic. Dr. Dean is, too. When you seek his care, he knows you have likely been tolerating a lot of pain to finally ask for help. He has been in your shoes and offers the connection and understanding you need to say yes to restoring your mobility.

Q&A with Dr. Dean

How many years should my joint replacement last?

Most joint replacements are designed to last 15 to 20 years, depending on your activity level and overall health. Regular check-ups and proper care can help extend the life of your joint. If you’re concerned about your joint replacement, JRMC is here to help you with ongoing care.

How many joints have you replaced in your career?

I’ve had the privilege of performing over 6,000 joint replacements throughout my career, helping countless patients regain their mobility and quality of life.

What is a partial joint replacement?

A partial joint replacement, often used in knee surgeries, involves replacing only the damaged portion of the joint. If you’re considering this procedure, JRMC can provide a personalized consultation to determine the best option for you.

What are some procedures people may not realize you perform?

In addition to joint replacements, I perform fracture repairs, ACL reconstructions and hand surgeries. These procedures are crucial for restoring function and relieving pain in various parts of the body.

What do you like about seeing patients in the JRMC Carrington Clinic?

The patients in Carrington are incredibly kind and appreciative. It’s rewarding to bring specialized care to their community, ensuring they receive the same quality treatment they would in a larger city. If you’re in the Carrington area, JRMC is ready to meet your orthopedic needs. Make an appointment here.

Have you been an orthopedic patient before?

Yes, I’ve been through several surgeries myself. This personal experience gives me a unique perspective on the patient journey, from surgery through recovery.

Is physical therapy an important aspect of recovery from surgery?

Absolutely. A successful recovery often hinges on a well-structured physical therapy plan. Physical therapy helps restore strength, mobility and function after surgery. At JRMC, our team works closely with patients to ensure they have the support needed to achieve the best outcomes.

How long does the overall recovery from a joint replacement take?

Recovery typically takes 3 to 4 months, depending on the individual and their commitment to physical therapy. Staying active and following your rehabilitation plan are key to a smooth recovery.

What sort of things keep your day interesting?

The variety in my work keeps each day exciting. I treat a wide range of patients, from infants to those over 100 years old, which means no two days are ever the same.

What helps you relate to the athletes in your care?

Having been a three-sport athlete in football, wrestling and track, I understand the dedication and challenges athletes face. This background helps me connect with athletic patients and tailor treatments to their unique needs.

Do you have a favorite piece of advice for long-term bone health?

My top advice is to keep moving. Maintaining your mobility is crucial because those who stay active tend to have fewer health problems as they age. If you need help staying mobile, JRMC offers a range of services to support your bone health.

The Dr, nurse all listened to me and were concerned about my condition before I had surgery.

Dr Dean answered my question. My knee Injections always work the best for knee pain when Dr Dean gives them. I wish he would instruct the other PA's his technique. It's a simple technique but his PA's that I've had are doing it differently than Dr. Dean and I don't get pain relief for 10 days to 2 weeks at times.
