Last summer, one of Dr. Roxanne Keene’s patients crossed the finish line of a 5K — just months after a same-day knee replacement. For Dr. Keene, moments like these are why she became an orthopedic surgeon.
“Knee replacements allow people to get back to doing the things they love,” she says. “They can vacation where they want, shop where they want — without their lives being dictated by chronic pain.”
When Dr. Keene joined JRMC’s orthopedic team in January 2025, she brought with her an advanced option for patients: same-day total knee replacement. “I was fortunate to step into a program with such a strong reputation. The team here was already delivering outstanding results for patients. My goal has been to build on that success by expanding the options available — like same-day knee replacement — so even more people can benefit,” says Dr. Keene.
Traditionally, patients spend a night in the hospital after surgery. With the same day approach, they begin moving, eating and starting physical therapy within hours — and, if they meet safety benchmarks, they head home the very same day.
“Going home right away seems to improve patients’ mindsets,” says Dr. Keene. “They push themselves further, become less reliant on others and recover in a space where they feel comfortable.”
After surgery, Dr. Keene and her team focus on safe, confident mobility. Patients work with a physical therapist before discharge to ensure they can walk and manage daily activities. Recovery continues at home with four to six weeks of physical therapy and follow-up visits at the JRMC Specialty Clinic.
Advancements in pain management have made this possible. “Years ago, patients stayed in the hospital for seven days after this surgery,” Dr. Keene says. “Now, with advancing techniques and better recovery protocols, many can go home the same day.”
Not everyone is a candidate for same-day knee replacement. The decision depends on factors like age, overall health and home support. While some patients choose to stay overnight at JRMC — usually because of travel distance — the procedure is safe and effective for those who go home the same day.
Dr. Keene is the only surgeon within 90 miles offering this life-changing procedure. Patients travel from across North Dakota for her expertise, drawn not only by her surgical skill but by the compassion she shows every patient.
