Recent fall? Accident-prone?
Nearly every second each day, a person age 65 and older suffers from a fall within the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And, women have a tendency to fall more often than men do.
If you or someone you know is at risk of falling, JRMC podiatry can help.
“There is no better way to prevent falls than early intervention as our feet are our foundation for balance and mobility,” shared Dr. Kayla Emter, JRMC podiatrist/foot & ankle surgeon. “As we age, our strength and flexibility in our legs and feet diminishes. This results in falls that can significantly change the quality of life. Our job as a podiatrist is identifying risks and preventing these falls.”
How to know if you or someone you love is at risk:
- Have you fallen within the last year?
- Are you often sleepy, lightheaded or confused?
- Are you deficient in Vitamin D?
- Do you have vision problems?
- Do you have difficulty walking or balancing?
- Loss of feeling or weakness in your lower body?
- Do you have a history of ankle or foot injuries?
If you said yes to any of the questions above, you may be at risk for a fall.
Falls can lead to other complications including arthritis, wound care and joint replacements. At Jamestown Regional Medical Center, our Podiatrist/Foot & Ankle Surgeons are able to evaluate and recommend changes that can help decrease your fall risk.
JRMC Podiatrists Dr. Rachael Renschler and Dr. Kayla Emter specialize in the conservative and surgical management of conditions of the foot and ankle. They are committed to providing the most advanced podiatric and surgical care possible.
