Ready. SET. Go!

Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s CardioPulmonary Rehab team offers a specially designed program called Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET) tailored for those with Peripheral Arterial Disease  (PAD). PAD is a vascular disease caused by a gradual build-up of plaque within the leg arteries. One in every 20 adults over the age of 50 and one in every five adults over the age of 70 are diagnosed with PAD.

Helping you every step of the way

What is SET?
SET helps people with PAD pain. The therapy targets the muscles that hurt when you walk such as the:

  • calf
  • thigh
  • buttock

SET helps improve circulation and available metabolites that can reduce or get rid of pain while walking. The therapy is mostly walking exercises. Certified exercise physiologists pair moderate intensity exercise training with lifestyle changes.
How will the program help me?
The program will help decrease pain associated with PAD and increase endurance (ability to move and walk for longer periods of time without pain) leading to an increase in sense of well-being and quality of life. It will also lower your risk of future complications that can result if PAD is left untreated such as heart attack, stroke, nerve damage and tissue breakdown.
Will I lose weight?
The exercises utilized in this program can certainly assist weight loss/management. Our staff can also provide education on all the components of weight loss and provide education/help you create an action plan to achieve this goal as you go through this program.
Who qualifies for this program?
Anyone with PAD. Some people may feel pain in their legs and not know they have PAD as the disease is often underdiagnosed. Connect with your primary care provider of the cardiopulmonary rehab team if your legs hurt while walking or resting. They can assess if this program is right for you.
Can I schedule myself?
Yes. If this program is a good fit for you, schedule an initial screening. We’ll work with your primary care provider to obtain a referral.
What is a session like?
Each visit is unique to each individual and his or her needs. Sessions last 60 minutes and include exercise therapy at the pace of each individual.
How long is the program?
The program lasts for three months. Most people schedule three visits a week, however, we can adjust the frequency visits and customize them for each individual.
I’m making good progress. What happens if I want to keep going?
We love this question! If maintaining a healthy lifestyle is your goal (and we hope it is!)
What do I wear?
We recommend loose, comfortable clothing such as a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. Choose a pair of shoes that fit comfortably and provide proper arch and heel support. Please ensure shoes are clean and dry.
What should I bring?
If you have been prescribed Nitro or inhaler, please bring it with you. If you are diabetic, we will check your blood glucose (sugar) before and after exercise, but we do encourage you to bring a carb source and your blood glucose monitor with you.
What does it cost?
Most insurance plans cover most if not all of the expenses related to the SET/PAD program. Call Patient Financial Services at (701) 952-4823 to see how it impacts you.
