Q&A with Morgan

What role does collaboration with other specialties play in your care approach?

Collaboration is essential. We work closely with physical and occupational therapy, primary care, orthopedics, podiatry, neurology and other specialties and providers. Pain often has multiple causes, so a team-based approach helps ensure the best outcomes.

JRMC focuses on non-opioid pain management. Why is that important to you as a provider?

Long-term opioid use can lead to dependence and even increased sensitivity to pain over time. Our focus is on safe, sustainable options that treat the root cause of pain rather than masking it. Ultimately, we see better long-term outcomes this way.

How would you describe your approach to pain management?

I focus on building strong connections with my patients and taking a holistic approach to care. That often means understanding not only the physical source of pain, but also how it impacts emotional and mental health. I take time to listen, validate each patient’s experience and work together to find the best path forward.

How do mental and emotional health impact chronic pain?

They play a big role in chronic pain and pain management! Chronic pain can lead to anxiety, depression and fear of movement, which can make pain feel worse. It often becomes a vicious cycle. Part of treatment is helping patients manage both the physical pain and the emotional impact that comes with it.

What are some non-opioid treatment options patients might be surprised to hear about?

We offer multiple non-opioid, minimally invasive treatments, including epidural steroid injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation, nerve blocks, and neuropathic medications. Our goal is to treat our patients as whole beings, so we will sometimes incorporate therapies that address related conditions like anxiety or depression, when appropriate.

Do I have chronic pain?

Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting longer than three months. It can occur anywhere in the body. If you have experienced prolonged pain, you can schedule a consultation with the JRMC Pain Management Clinic online or by calling (701) 952-4878, no referral needed!

What lifestyle factors play a role in pain management (like movement, sleep, stress, etc.)?

Staying active is one of the most important things a person can do to manage their pain outside of the clinic. I often say, “motion is lotion,” which means that when you start moving, you keep moving. Activities like walking, light strength training or swimming can be very beneficial. It is important to always listen to your body and avoid overdoing things to prevent future injuries or pain.

What should I expect from my first visit to the Pain Management Clinic?

Patients can expect a thorough evaluation. We will go through their history, perform a physical exam and review any imaging together. There tends to be a strong focus on education in the first appointment so patients can understand their condition and treatment options. In most cases, procedures like injections are not done on the initial visit.
