Q&A with Crystal

Crystal Krapp, DNP-C
Why did you choose to specialize in orthopedic medicine?

I enjoy helping people stay active and keep doing the things they want to do. Orthopedics allows me to do exactly. It is so rewarding to be part of a patient’s journey from injury or surgery to healing and full recovery.

You are a busy mom; do you give your kids any orthopedic advice?

Yes, definitely! Both of my children are active in sports which naturally brings some aches, pains and injuries. I am a big advocate for warming up with proper stretching, strength training and ensuring proper posture is used to help protect the body from injuries. When my daughter experienced a significant knee injury in gymnastics that required surgery, I was able to help guide her through the process. Being able to support her as both a provider and a mom made a tough time a little easier for both of us.

Can you explain your role within JRMC’s orthopedic team?

As a provider in the orthopedic clinic, I see patients with a wide variety of orthopedic concerns and create a patient centered plan of care. These may include casting or splinting, injections, prescribing medicine, coordinating with physical or occupational therapy and even surgery. One of my favorite parts of my job is assisting our surgeons in the operating room. This perspective on treatment allows me to better aid the patient through the journey.

What can patients expect from their first orthopedic visit with you?

I like to spend time getting to know how each patient’s unique orthopedic concern is affecting their daily life. Knowing their baseline and their goals helps us create a plan of care that’s realistic, meaningful and effective.

How do you tailor care for active patients?

I ensure that we are both on the same page with goals and timelines that fit their lifestyle. Whether it’s getting ready for a big game, a vacation or an event, open communication helps us build a plan that works and supports their recovery.

How do you help patients avoid surgery when possible?

There are often several non-surgical options available, whether it be splinting/casting, medications like anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, injections or simply time for the body to heal. Each patient is unique so it’s important for me to get to know them and explain all available options. Taking care of your body is one of the best ways to avoid surgery. You can do this by living a healthy lifestyle — eating well, staying physically active and strength training.

How do you decide when a patient needs to be referred for surgery?

Once a patient has exhausted non-operative options that are feasible for them and they are physically unable to do the things that they want to do, I will encourage them to consider surgery. Once they feel ready, I refer them to the next step in their care.

Is there something that you wish people knew about orthopedic medicine?

Orthopedics covers much more than just arthritis and fractures! One area I’m especially passionate about is the prevention and management of osteoporosis. There are exciting new treatment options available that can help reduce the risk of fractures. If you’re curious to learn more, contact the JRMC Specialty Clinic.
