Jamestown Regional Medical Center is breaking barriers in orthopedic care with the upcoming arrival of Dr. Roxanne Keene, one of the first female orthopedic surgeons in North Dakota. Her expertise and inspiring story bring new energy to JRMC, where she will join Dr. Michael T. Dean in early January.

Less than 6 percent of orthopedic surgeons nationwide are female. Dr. Keene’s presence at JRMC is not just significant, it’s historic. Born and raised in Ray, North Dakota, Dr. Keene began her career as a physician assistant in orthopedics before pursuing medical school and becoming a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. Now, she’s combining her expertise with a drive to make orthopedic care more inclusive and accessible.

“I think it’s important for people to see that this is a valid option for women,” Dr. Keene said. “Representation matters, and I hope to inspire others to follow this path through mentoring and being a visible role model.”

Dr. Keene offers a broad range of general orthopedic services, including knee and shoulder arthroscopy, joint replacement and trauma care. Known for her innovative approach, she embraces the latest advancements in technology to help patients recover faster and return to the activities they love.

“It’s rewarding to see patients reclaim their lives – whether it’s golfing, vacationing or simply walking through a store without pain,” she shared.

Patients can look forward to personalized, compassionate care from Dr. Keene, who takes pride in treating a variety of cases. “I love the diversity of my work. No two days are ever the same, especially with trauma cases, which always bring unique challenges.”

Dr. Keene’s leadership in orthopedics extends far beyond the clinic. She currently serves as president of the North Dakota Orthopaedic Society and is an active member of both the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Keene’s passion for community runs deep. Outside of work, she stays active with her husband and two daughters, golfing, traveling and supporting their sports endeavors. She also connects with other physician moms through an online Peloton community, where she finds motivation and balance.

Dr. Keene’s arrival enhances JRMC’s orthopedic and sports medicine program, giving patients in the Jamestown region more access to advanced orthopedic care. Her story inspires pride and excitement but more importantly, her expertise will inspire confidence in every patient she serves.

Dr. Keene will start seeing patients in early 2025.
