On April 2, 2024, Jamestown Regional Medical Center hosted its first blood drive since suspending the program in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vitalant blood drive, organized by JRMC’s Community Engagement Committee, exceeded its goal of 31 successful donors by welcoming 43 members of the local community and JRMC employees who donated blood.
“We are thrilled with the turnout for our first blood drive in over three years,” said Nicole Saavedra, Chair of the JRMC Community Engagement Committee. “The need for blood donations is constant, and the generosity of our community members and staff will help save lives.”
Blood donation is considered an essential healthcare service, even during public health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. While JRMC paused blood drives in 2020 due to safety concerns, the medical center has stringent infection protocols in place to ensure the safety of all blood drive participants.
“The staff at JRMC went above and beyond to make this blood drive safe, efficient and successful,” said Weldon Roberts, Vitalant account manager. “We are grateful for their partnership in helping maintain the blood supply for needy patients across our region.”
JRMC plans to continue hosting blood drives with Vitalant four times per year. The next blood drive is expected to take place in August.
