Help is here
If you’ve experienced sexual violence, you are not alone. We’re here for you. Any unwanted, forced or coerced sexual activity is known as sexual assault. It can happen to anyone, of any age or gender at any time. Sexual assault can take place in various forms:
- forced or coerced intercourse or other acts
- sexual harassment
- sexual exposure
- unwanted touching
The first thing to know is, it is not your fault. Should an assault occur, you have a support team.
What is a SANE?
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) are registered nurses forensically-trained to offer the very best care during a difficult time. SANE is part of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), which also includes law enforcement, the state’s attorney and SAFE Shelter. This team helps victims navigate the complexities of medical, emotional and legal issues along with the associated procedures.
Jamestown has eight SANE nurses. These nurses are trained to conduct a forensic exam and may provide expert testimony if a case goes to trial.
SANE encourages any victims to come in for an exam. Advocates will walk each individual through his or her options.
What is the exam?
The exam gathers evidence of a crime and must be completed within 72 hours of the assault. Along with a physical exam, expect:
- information gathering
- treatment of injuries
- documentation of biological & physical findings
- collection of evidence from the patient
- referrals for STIs, pregnancy, suicidal ideation, alcohol and substance abuse
- addressing other medical concerns
Victims will receive follow up as needed to receive additional healing, treatment or if more evidence collection is needed.
The exam may take between 2 to 4 hours. Each step of the exam is up to the victim. The process is entirely optional, even if the victim is a minor.
