Congratulations to Team NS Nuts, the top point earner for New Year New You Challenge Week 7.

Team NS Nuts includes four participants from Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s Apple Basket Café. NYNY is an eight-week wellness challenge that encourages participants to develop positive lifestyle changes.

NS Nuts team member and JRMC nutrition aide, Elayne Hartman, said, “Throughout NYNY, I have made a point to take the stairs versus the elevator. This wellness challenge has also helped me to focus on eating more fruits and vegetables.”

NYNY is about exercising and eating right. It’s also about making healthy choices that will benefit you and your family for years to come.

After eight weeks of hard work, take pride in all you’ve accomplished. How do you feel today compared to January? How great could you feel in eight more weeks?

Even though the NYNY challenge is ending, continue those healthy choices. Use this week to schedule preventative exams including annual physicals, dental visits, mammograms and pap smears.

“A trip to the dentist is about more than checking for cavities,” said Dr. Kenneth McDougall, Downtown Dental. “Many serious health problems can result from poor oral care. Heart disease, for example, may occur when a bacteria in inflamed gums enters the bloodstream. Some bacteria from gingivitis may lead to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.”

So brush and floss twice a day and visit your dentist twice per year. Doing so will improve your teeth and perhaps your overall health.

For this week’s ten NYNY bonus points, play in the Young Professionals of Jamestown volleyball tournament on March 4. You can earn 10 points for completing the NYNY post-challenge survey by midnight, March 3. In addition, NYNY participants can earn points for drinking 80 ounces of water and sleeping more than seven hours at night.

Teams’ points are due by 10 a.m. Tuesday.
